We are excited to announce that symphonic winds will be added to the Ensemble! Emphasizing the fundamentals of ensemble playing, the Strand String and Wind Ensemble is an ideal first orchestral experience for students of violin, viola, cello, double bass as well as flute, piccolo, clarinet, oboe, English horn, and bassoon, in elementary, middle and high school or adults. The Ensemble is presented as a weekly workshop during the academic year and as a one week camp during the summer. Rehearsals will focus on the mastery of string orchestra techniques, listening, following, leadership, rhythm, and blend of sound. The intense preparation of repertoire culminates in Winter, Spring and Summer concerts.New and continuing members must demonstrate a minimal degree of proficiency in their instrument for acceptance and placement in the ensemble. Audition InformationAuditions are in September, January and June each year and are announced via the Hackettstown Center for the Arts Calendar. PrerequisitesBeginner members must currently be studying with a private instructor and/or have good intermediate/advanced sight-reading skills.ScholarshipsFrom time to time, through grants and donations, the Hackettstown Center for the Arts provides scholarships for new and continuing ensemble members that demonstrate outstanding talent. Selection is by the Board of Directors, the Artistic Director and Audition by Appointment. Contact the Center at 908-813-2626 for additional details. The EnsembleThe Ensemble meets four semesters a year. Each semesters consists of 10 weeks of one hour rehearsals with a public performance on the last week. The Summer semester is a one week intensive also concluding with a public performance. Rehearsals are every Tuesday evening from 7-8pm. Members may enroll in any or all semesters. Tuition: $220.The ConductorThe Ensemble is conducted by Prof. Chris Lance, the Artistic Director of the Hackettstown Center for the Arts and owner of Strand Studios. He trained under and performed in the Bergen Youth Orchestra under Mr. Eugene Minor at a young age. Since then, has produced and conducted numerous string ensembles, concerts and musical competitions.
